Vlisco Wax Prints

Over the past years, Simone Post has designed numerous print patterns for the wax printing company Vlisco, based in Helmond, The Netherlands. The drawings are mostly made by hand before they are digitalized for the production process. Vlisco only works with a big canvas size of 117 x 91.6 cm for their designs which are repeated in a single direction. These drawings are composed of a wax-printed (often indigo-dyed) base layer. The wax is applied using copper engraved rolls. After the first layer, the base is overlaid with a maximum of 2 or 3 layers of stencil-printed colors. You can always recognize the prints from Vlisco at the self-edge mentioning Vlisco, Guaranteed Dutch Wax/Wax Hollandais and the unique print number. Her designs are often inspired by the making process she comes across in her other works like weaving, knotting, twisting and pleating. Therefor the drawing collection almost serves as a visual diary of her past years as a maker.
