Industrial knitted plaids
At the invitation of the TextielMuseum and Hella Jongerius (Jongeriuslab) Simone Post designed a knitted plaid for the label ‘By Textielmuseum’. Besides inspiring exhibitions, the TextielMuseum features a highly innovative TextielLab where designers get to experiment with industrial machines and visitors get a unique peek into a world that is normally out of sight. In the TextielLab, Simone studied the museum’s collection and re-examined old samples. She was inspired by reliefs, cables and Aran stitches used in classic hand knitted fabrics. These are all made by combining left and right stitches, also known as knit and purl. Using an industrial technique, both left and right were given another colour. This created a very new layered image with many references to traditional handmade knitwork, but in fact impossible to create by hand. Simone took an archetypal pattern, the herringbone, a zigzag pattern she enlarged. By using subtle ascending colours and alternating melange and monochrome, the pattern appears and disappears from left to right.
